Friday Night Live Celebrating Israel at 75
Tens of thousands of hostile troops were readying for invasion when the leaders of the Jewish community of British-mandate Palestine gathered in the old Tel Aviv Museum of Art building for the declaration they’d struggled toward for decades. The ceremony had been kept secret lest the British attempt to thwart it on their last day of rule. But word had leaked out in the Jewish community and hundreds crowded along Rothschild Boulevard.
At 4:00 PM, David Ben Gurion, flanked by the 36 other members of the National Council of the Jewish community, rapped his gavel and decreed: “By virtue of the natural and historic right of the Jewish people…we hereby proclaim the establishment of the Jewish State in Palestine to be called Medinat Yisrael.”
It was May 14, 1948, the 5th day of Iyar, 5708.
Seventy-five years later, to celebrate that historic moment and Israel’s formidable achievements since, Temple Emanu-El and Temple Israel of New York, proudly welcome Achinoam “Noa” Nini and Gil Dor to pay a musical tribute to the history of the land and its people.
With roots in Yemen, Israel and the U.S., Noa is a singer, songwriter, poet and percussionist who has represented Israel at Eurovision, performed at Carnegie Hall, the White House and the Vatican and shared the stage with the world’s greatest performers, including Stevie Wonder, Andrea Bocelli and Sting. Gil Dor, her musical partner, is the co-founder of the Rimon School of Music. They have released fifteen albums.
