DR. AVIVAH GOTTLIEB ZORNBERG: A WEEK-LONG BIBLICAL EXPERIENCE NIGHT FOUR: JOSEPH AND HIS BROTHERS – THE PIT AND THE ROPE

REGISTER

Over the millennia, Torah teaching has had its fair share of rock stars, from Maimonides to Rashi. But these days, the superstar of biblical commentary is Dr. Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg, who has created a new approach to Torah teaching — an innovative blend of biblical narrative, Talmud, literature, secular philosophy and psychology that is at once so ancient and so ultramodern that she packs auditoriums across the globe.

Even as a child, Avivah Zornberg studied Torah, both in school and under her father, who was head of the Rabbinical Court of Scotland. She went on to devote herself to literature for both her undergraduate degree and her doctorate at Cambridge University — although she had co-authored a book of Bible studies while she was still in her teens. After university, she moved to Jerusalem and has built an international reputation as an insightful teacher and lecturer, interpreting the Torah based on Midrash, literary theory, psychoanalysis and philosophy. She is the author of five books.

Dr. Zornberg joins us for a series of pop-up classes followed by conversations with leading New York rabbis, all moderated by Abigail Pogrebin, writer, journalist, podcast host and author of My Jewish Year: 18 Holidays, One Wondering Jew.
